About Us
We are a mommy, a daddy, two little girls (6 & 8) and a little boy
(2) living in a 960 square foot doublewide mobile home located in a rural
area of Pennsylvania.
Because we had experienced some past difficulties with mounting
credit card debt and medical bills, we chose to file bankruptcy and were
granted a discharge in 1998.
Following our discharge, we purchased the used mobile home we now live
in for a mere $5000 and moved it onto our own 2-acre property. Believing that this home would be
temporary until we were back on our feet and able to build a real home,
we did not choose to set it up on a permanent foundation. It was set on cement pillars,
tied-down and skirted as required (probably one of the worst decisions we
could have made).
Since then, we have worked
diligently to stay atop of our household and regular medical bills, carry
only a few manageable credit cards and generally live as frugally as we
are able in the hope that we would be able to build our family a real
home within a few years. It
has now been six years and we have severely outgrown our current living
situation.
This 24’ x 40’, 3 bedroom, 1
bath home has long past seen its best years. Due to its location on our property, six years of
moisture is catching up.
Mold is beginning to grow along the outside of our house on the
side where our children’s bedrooms are located. Moisture between the “screwed on” panes that are our
windows has led to cracking, peeling “sills” and the growth of black
mold. A concern that has
weighed heavily on us since our youngest daughter has now been diagnosed
with asthma and, looking back, likely to have been a factor in our son’s
repetitive and frightening episodes of RSV and bronchiolitis throughout
his first 2 years of life.
The oil furnace gives out at any
point in time it so chooses throughout the winters, and we find ourselves
often moving the children to the living room and heating both the kitchen
and living room via our electric oven. The floor beneath our washer and
drying is flexing and sagging, as is the floor surrounding our tub and
toilet. On most winter days,
you can literally feel the movement of cold air as it seemingly blows
straight through our walls.
All of us seem to suffer
frequent and severe headaches, body aches, sinus infections and sore
throats. This causes missed
time from both work and school and we can’t help but think that our frequent
illnesses are directly related to the mold growth in and around our home.
It is clearly time to a) make
major improvements/renovations to this home or b) finally build our own
home. We’ve recently applied
for a mortgage and, though it is six years following discharge, were
denied due to our past bankruptcy.
At this point, we are feeling
rather helpless and have come to the internet to share our story and ask
for the aid of our fellow humankind.
